Networks begin when two or more computers are connected so that information can be shared. In order to connect to any kind of network, a computer requires a network card and CAT5 or CAT6 cables. (If the computer has a “wireless” network card, radio signals can be used in place of the cables.) A network also requires a piece of equipment called a switch, which acts as a central routing “hub” for the information being shared. A switch is kind of like a mail room in a large company. You may have heard the term LAN or WAN. LAN stands for Local Area Network, and usually denotes a network of computers which are fairly close together, say in the same building or office. WAN stands for Wide Area Network. WANs usually connect local area networks which are separated by great distances. (For example, a larger company may have an office LAN in Seattle, and an office LAN in Boston. These two LANs could be connected via a WAN data line.)

Dua macam topologi jaringan computer yaitu Toologi Bus dan Topologi Star.Terus apa sich yang di maksud Topologi Jaringan itu sendiri?mungkin itu pertanyaan yan g anda ajukan?Oke kita bahas dulu tentang topologi Jaringan tersebut.
Topologi Jaringan ini berhubungan dengan Layout computer,Kabel dan Perankat kmputer lain.Adanya topologi Jaringa ini dapat berpengaruh terhadap jenis peralatan yan dibutuhkan,kemampuan dari peralatan ,perkembangan jaringan,manajemen jaringan.Selain itu,topologi jaringan juga berpengaruh pada : komunikasi antara computer yang satu dengan kompuiter yang lain di jaringan,tipe kabel yang dibutuhkan,sekaligus network adapter card dan system operasi yang digunakan.
Selanjutnya,berikut penjelasan dari dua topologi jaringan yang sidah disebutkan diatas,yaitu:
Topologi Bus
Topologi ini juga dikenal sebagai topologi linear bus.Topologi ini merupakan yang paling sederhana dan paling umum jika dibandingkan dengan Topologi yang lainya.Jenis dari Topologi Bus terdiri dari satu kabel,disebut sebagai segman atau backbone yang menghubungkjan semua computer pada jaringan.
Karena data dalam bentuk sinyal elektroniks dikirimkan ke seluruh jaringan,maka sinyal akan berjalan dari satu titik ke titik kabel yang lain.Apabila sinyal tidak dihentikan,sinyal akan memantul dan akan bergerak bolak-nalik dari satu ujung lainya sehingga menghalangi computer lain untuk mengirimkan sinyal.Karena itu sinyal harus dihilangkan dengan menggunakan terminator,setelah sinyal telah mencapai titik tujuan yang di inginkan.
Terminator ini digunakan unbtuk menyerap sinyal pada kabel guna menghindari timbulnya signal bounce.Tanpa terminator jaringan tidak akan dapat digunakan.
Topologi Star
Pada topologi star,computer dihubungkan oleh kabel ke satu titik terpusat,yang disebut sebagai hub.Sinyal dikirimkan oleh computer pengirim melalui hub ke seluruh komkponen di jaringan
Topologi star memungkinkan adanya manajemen jaringan secara tersentral.Tetapi,karena setiap computer terhubung ke hub,maka otomatis dibutuhkan kabel dalam jumlah besar.Selain itu,apabila terjadi kerusakan pada hub,maka seluruh jaringan akan mati.Apabila salah satu computer saja yang mengalami masalah,atau kabel terputus.Jaringan toologi ini tidak akan terganggu.Hanya computer bermasaah saja yang terganggu (tidak dapat menerima dan mengirim data.).

Ada dua cara menghubungkan antar PC dengan system wireless,yaitu system ad hoc dan Acces Point.Sistem ad hoc merupakan hubungan antar PC berdasarkan nama SSID (Service Set IDentifier).SSID adalah nama computer yang memiliki card,USB dan perangkat wireless.Setiap perangkat harus diberi nama tersendiri sebagai identitas.Saat ini sistem Acces Point paling umum dipakai dalam teknologi wireless jaringan karena lebih mudah instalasinya.Sistem Acces Point berbentuk PCI card atau sebuah unit hardware yang berfungsi dapat melakukan broadcast ke beberapa computer client pada jarak radius tertentu.

Alamat IP merupakan kode biner yang terdiri dari 32 bit dan dibagi menjadi dua bagian identifikasi sebagai berikut:
1.Bagian identifikasi net ID menunjukan identitas jaringan computer tempat host-host (komputer) dihubungkan.
2.Bagian identifikasi host ID memberikan suatu pengenal unik pada setiap host (komputer ) pada suatu jaringan computer.
Pada terminology TCP/IP “ satu jaringan ” merupakan sekelompok host yang dapat berkomunikasi secara langsung tanpa router.Host dalam TCP / IP paling sedikit membpunyai satu alamat IP.Semua host TCP / IP yang menempati satu jaringan yang sama harus diberi net ID yang sama.Host yang mempunyai net ID berbeda dapat berkomunikasi melalui router.
Suatu TCP / IP internetwork adalah struktur jaringan yang terdiri dari beberapa jaringan computer dan menggabungkan beberapa jaringan agar dapat berkomunikasi.Struktur jaringan tersebut memerlukan router.Setiap jaringan pada internetwork harus diberi net ID yang unik.
Net ID sebagai identitas jaringan,sedangkan host ID sebagai identitas host.Berikut data penjelasanya:
Net ID menempati most significant bit (MSB atau bit-bit paling kanan ) dari alamat IP
Host ID berada pada least significant bit (LSB atau bit-bit paling kiri ).
Sebagai penentu net ID dan host ID digunakan net mask.
